WARSAW — Thanks to a grant from the Kosciusko County Community Foundation, the city of Warsaw Parks & Recreation Department now has four active iStrike Lightning Detection systems. These systems are located at both Center and Pike Lake beaches, the Pike Lake Campground and Central Park.
Although each alarm system is positioned at a different location, they all utilize a three ring system or three level system when detecting lightning. Each ring represents a distance in miles from the alarm system or location, which the parks department can preset. The first ring of detection will alert park employees that lightning is approaching the area. The second ring of detection will trigger a red strobe light, visually, on the alarm systems themselves that lightning is close to the immediate area. The third and final detection ring will trigger a warbling audible alarm, warning all park patrons that lightning has struck within the immediate area.
When park patrons see that the strobe light is on, they should be aware that lightning strikes are close and should seek adequate shelter. When the alarm sounds, park patrons should seek immediate shelter. Once the threat of lightning has passed, the system will give an all clear signal. The audible alarm will give three short siren sounds and the strobe light will not be on. It is at this point that all park patrons can resume activities at these sites.
This is a warning system, which will act as an additional safety precaution to our beaches, campground and any activities occurring at Central Park. Despite the amazing capabilities of this system, the parks department does still urge the public to exercise common sense when dangerous weather conditions are approaching the area.
